Dugi otok Trail 2019.

Description: Dugi otok Trail

Cleaning campaign!

We invite you to join the cleaning campaign that will be held in Telašćica Nature Park on 21 May 2016 from 8:00 till 14:00.
With scuba diving clubs cleaning the submarine areas of the Park, all visitors can get involved in the cleaning of the coastal belt – frequently a victim of waste brought by wind and sea. This year's campaign continues a number of years of tradition. In addition to scuba diving clubs, members of the local community also participate in cleaning campaigns, either choosing the coves they wish to clean with their small boats, or receiving instructions from our ranger service. After the campaign, a pleasant socializing event awaits the participants in the cove of Mir, as well as a workshop for preschool children on scuba diving and environmental protection.

Presentation of the SEA-Med Project in Croatia at a regional event dedicated to Mediterranean protected areas

Presentation of the SEA-Med project in Croatia at the regional event Towards sustainable tourism in Mediterranean MPAs, dedicated to Mediterranean protected areas.

SEA-Med Project

SEA-Med Project is a regional project with six participating Mediterranean countries, including Croatia. Aims of the project being implemented in Croatia are the following: support to the implementation of management plans for Lastovo Archipelago Nature Park and Telašćica Nature Park; development of a sustainable tourism plan that would improve the practice of sustainable tourism; promoting the initiative of tourism founded upon natural values; recognition of financial mechanisms in protected marine areas and promotion of sustainable fisheries. The SEA-Med project is managed by WWF MedPO (Rome Office), and the aim of the comprehensive project is to provide support to eight protected marine areas in six Mediterranean countries (Albania, Algeria, Croatia, Libya, Tunisia and Turkey), in order for them to complete the initial stage and to make further steps towards self-sustainability. National Croatian coordinator of the project is the association Sunce from Split.

One major step for the protected area and for the local community was made during the implementation of the MedPAN South Project, when the institutions opened their doors towards the local community and decided to build firm foundations for future joint management by including proposals and attitudes of the local community – a process that resulted in the preparation of Protected Area Management Plans. On the basis of these achieved results, we decided to take a step forward.

By becoming part of the process of sustainable tourism development planning, we considered it important not to limit ourselves only to the boundaries of protected areas as such. This is where two involved Croatian protected areas differ from each other. The area of the Lastovo Archipelago Nature Park is territorially identical to the area of the Municipality, while Telašćica Nature Park represents only a small part of its Municipality.

When it comes to the Telašćica Nature Park, this perspective was quite important for the local community, and also for the island of Dugi otok as a whole. The stakeholders concluded that it would not make sense to create a Sustainable Tourism Development Plan just for the area located within the boundaries of the officially protected area. Instead, the conclusion was that we should use the tourist potential of the protected area in order to ensure sustainable development of the entire island. This approach is important in order for us to retain the earned trust by involving the local community. At the same time, we want to establish a stronger communication network with all participants, and to educate the relevant institutions about the importance of investing in sustainable destination development.

Results of the research were presented to the public at the Sea Tuesday event held at the City Library in Zadar on December 15, 2015. The presenters at the event were Đani Iglić and Alen Petani from the Sv. Roko scuba diving club, and Milena Ramov from the Telašćica Nature Park.
