Doors Open Day

Due to their unique natural characteristics, extraordinary geomorphological features and magnificent forests, the areas of Velika Paklenica and Mala Paklenica were declared a National Park on 19 October 1949. The key reason for giving the National Park status to this area was to protect the most conserved and the largest forest complex in the area of Dalmatia.

As we celebrate the 67th birthday of the Paklenica National Park, we have decided to organize Doors Open Day of the Park on Sunday, 16 October 2016.

All visitors will thus get the opportunity to visit the Park free of charge, as well as the cave Manita peć and the Paklenica Underground City visitor center. Food and beverages at favorable prices will be available at the Lugarnica facility in the Park.

We look forward to your arrival!

  • Workshops and games for children – children will get the opportunity to draw and paint bats, and they will also make bat masks, hats, dragons, finger puppets and origami bats. Plenty of other programs will be available too;
  • Lecture on bats – after the workshop, what follows is an interactive lecture on bats and bat research in Paklenica National Park, in order for all of us to learn more about these very intriguing and endangered animals;
  • Listening to bats using bat detectors – after the lecture, we will go searching for bats using ultrasound detectors (so-called bat detectors) that allow us to hear their frequencies, otherwise imperceptible to the human ear.

VDF - Vertical dance forum

An international development project VDF – Vertical Dance Forum was presented in the local town hall in Starigrad Paklenica on December 5, 2015. The project includes seven leaders of renowned dance troupes (from Ireland, Italy, France, Croatia, United Kingdom and Canada) and three professional riggers, members of mountain rescue services from North Wales, Canada and Croatia with diverse and complementary experiences in protection, security and safety measures in high-altitude operations.

The VDF was held in Starigrad Paklenica and in the Paklenica National Park from 2 to 7 December 2015, organized by Marija Šćekić from the artistic organization Histeria Nova and the Paklenica National Park. This European and international group has been established out of desire to bring together experts in vertical dance with diverse experiences, in order to discuss and jointly analyze the situation relevant for the evolution of this still young art form, having in mind its expansion and its new directions.

The group consists of experts in vertical dance with diverse and complementary experiences. Some members of the group are art directors of their own groups; some are independent art directors working on projects of other artists. Some have been active in vertical dance for years, while others are in the process of introducing this art form into their respective areas of activity. Some are engaged in university research, while others are focused on field research, etc.

VDF members are:
1. Fabrice Guillot – Retouramont and Vertical Dance Centre (France)
2. Kate Lawrence & 3. Simon Edwards – Vertical Dance Kate Lawrence (North Wales)
4. Julia Taffe & 5. Colin Zacharias – Aeriosa (Canada)
6. Wanda Moretti – Il Posto (Italy)
7. Chantal McCormick – Fidget Feet Aerial Dance and Irish Aerial Creation Centre (Ireland)
8. Marija Šćekić– Histeria Nova (Croatia)
9. Lindsey Butcher – Gravity & Levity (United Kingdom)

Goals and projects

The Vertical Dance Forum is a result of the desire to engage in exchange of experiences and knowledge, with the aim of participating in the development, promotion and spreading of vertical dance in its comprehensive diversity. The project is focused on expansion of the art form, which includes a number of aspects: research and information on the origin and background of vertical dance; where vertical dance comes from; who created it; where are we at this point in time...

The approach includes personal questioning on how comprehensive training in vertical dance should be designed, and how vertical dance practices enrich other practices (dance, theater, circus, etc.) and diverse audiences (youth, persons with disabilities). When it comes to sharing and exchanging knowledge and experience on best practice in safety and security – there are no rules, merely advice. One of the aims is to analyze the repertoire and theory of vertical dance – in order to examine whether it can be considered “a new art”.

Tools and results

A brochure representing the process of vertical dance. The aim of VDF is to provide a reference art tool, and to present the development, perspectives and identity of vertical dance at the European and international level.

Curricula for teaching and training on vertical dance for future professional dancers, resulting from the analysis and training classes led by Forum members.

Practical guidance on materials and some techniques, with informative and preventive approach. The intention is not to formulate the rules; instead, the aim is to enable professional dancers to get better acquainted with their material and to improve their safety.

Reference website, public meeting and events, workshops and debates.
