U okviru ekspedicije biospeleološki i speleološki će se detaljno i sustavno istražiti 7 dubokih jama Biokova (Amfora, Stara škola, Pretnerova jama, Biokovka, Jama pod Kamenitim vratima, Mokre noge i Vilimova jama), dubine i do 800 metara, od kojih 4 jame spadaju u 10 najdubljih hrvatskih jama.

Biokovo Vertical adventure race

Do you know which race in Croatia is the only race in the format of one vertical kilometer? The answer is simple: Biokovo Vertical – a race that offers participants the opportunity to enjoy the unique natural environment of Biokovo Nature Park, together with spectacular views along the entire race route. The length of the race route is 3.6 kilometers in total, and the total elevation difference is exactly 1000 meters.

Biokovo Vertical is the only race in Croatia held in the format of one vertical kilometer. In addition to the unique natural environment of the Nature Park, the race also offers the competitors the opportunity to enjoy a spectacular view along the entire trail. Markings and signposts directing the competitors to the finish line will be placed along the route. In addition, elevation markings will also be placed at every 200 meters of elevation difference.

World Water Day 2017 marked in the Park

As part of the marking of this year's World Water Day on 22 March 2017, Biokovo Nature Park Public Institution continued with its traditional campaign of spring cleaning of water wells, ponds and solution pans in the area of the Park. Activities included the cleaning of the Vodice water well, located along the educational trail Paths of Ancient Berulia in the Biokovo Nature Park above the settlement of Gornja Brela, in order to ensure a water reservoir for animals in the Park, and in order to conserve significant habitats and species dependent on water. The campaign was implemented in cooperation with the association Brolanenses from Brela.

World Water Day is marked on 22 March each year, in order to draw the attention to the importance of freshwater and to promote sustainable management of freshwater resources. In its resolution of 22 February 1993, the UN General Assembly decided that 22 March should be marked as World Water Day, in order to draw the attention of the general public worldwide to issues related to water and water resources. Every year, World Water Day is dedicated to a specific aspect of water, and this year's theme inspiring various activities on the occasion of the World Water Day is wastewater.

PLANT 1000 ABOVE 1000 campaign held

On Friday and Monday, 17 and 20 March 2017, Biokovo Nature Park Public Institution provided 3500 kilograms of seed potato to owners of arable land in Biokovo karst valleys located above the 1000 m.a.s.l. threshold, aiming to promote traditional agriculture among the local population.

The farmers received seed potato of the Red Lady variety, which has proven to provide abundant, high-quality yields in mountain areas. The campaign involved approximately 100 interested owners of arable land in karst valleys of Biokovo located on the southern and northern side of the mountain, who received seed potato in 25-kilogram bags. The Park is aiming to promote potato as a traditional agricultural plant present on Biokovo for centuries – providing excellent quality in agricultural production at the highest elevations in Croatia. In addition, this campaign will also help to obtain insight into the actual quantities of potato produced in the Biokovo Nature Park. This particular measure is part of a package of incentives and subsidies for the local population, foreseen in the Management Plan of the Public Institution as its strategic document.

Kaoci Education and Information Center opened

Kaoci Education and Information Center was opened with the support of the ForestEye project in the area of Kaoci on Biokovo, at 1050 meters above sea level, on 28 February 2017. Its renovation was financed through the ForestEye project, implemented as part of the Croatia – Bosnia and Herzegovina cross-border cooperation program within the framework of the Instrument for Pre-Accession Assistance (IPA).

In addition to the renovation of an old ranger station and three water wells, new facilities have also been built in the area of Kaoci, such as a stone amphitheater that will be used for educational presentations, three gazebos with benches and tables, as well as swings and teeter-totters for the youngest visitors.

Project Manager Zoran Šunjić addressed the audience in his introductory speech, sharing key information about the Kaoci Education Center with the visitors. Miroslav Gaće, Head of the Municipality of Zagvozd, also greeted the participants, pointing out that this project is very important for the municipality that has over 40 percent of its territory within the boundaries of the Biokovo Nature Park. Mr. Gaće added that Kaoci Education Center and the access fire road leading to it will surely contribute to the development of the area. As an example, he mentioned that the renovation of ancient shepherds' dwellings in the area has already begun, and that these dwellings will be used for tourism purposes in the future. Head of the Forest Directorate Split welcomed the successful completion of the ForestEye project, expressing hope that more projects of this kind will take place in the near future, while Draško Brnić, President of the Board of Herzeg-Bosnia Forestry Company, stated that it would be a pleasure to engage in new projects with the Croatian Forests company as partner. Staff of Biokovo Nature Park also expressed pleasure due to the project and constructed infrastructure, which will enable the development of the northern area of the Nature Park, inaccessible until recently. They also held a brief presentation on key characteristics of the Park on the occasion.

The ForestEye project was supported by EU funds dedicated to cross-border cooperation, and implemented as part of the 2007-2013 Croatia – Bosnia and Herzegovina Cross-Border Cooperation Program within the Instrument for Pre-Accession Assistance (IPA).

Croatian partners in the project included the company Croatian Forests and Institute for Development and International Relations (IRMO), and partners from Bosnia and Herzegovina were the Herzeg-Bosnia Forestry Company and the Ministry of Science, Education, Culture and Sport of Herzeg-Bosnia County. On 21 February 2017, beginning at 19:00, the Mimara Museum in Zagreb, Roosveltov trg 5, will host the photo exhibition CvitAdriona by Ivo Pervan. The exhibition will be open for visits until 28 February 2017.

Already 35 years have passed since the adoption of the Act on the Proclamation of the Biokovo Mountain as Nature Park on 29 May 1981. The law was published on 16 June 1981, and entered into force on 24 June 1981. Photo exhibition by the renowned photographer Ivo Pervan from Split, entitled Cvit Adriona and organized on the occasion of this anniversary, presents the fascinating forms and unique aspects of "Biokovo flowers" revealed by the author through his lens. It is an honor and a pleasure to note that Mr. Pervan, winner of the Red Dot Design award, and an artist with a number of exhibitions of his work organized throughout the world, from Tokyo and Sydney to Montreal, London and Rome, decided to explore the rocky wilderness of Biokovo in his fascination with the local natural and cultural heritage, revealing to us his artistic impression of the "soul of Adrion". The author's own roots are immersed deep in the Biokovo region, and his selection of photographs also reflects a symbolical link with Biokovo – not only physical, but also artistic – thus additionally bolstering the Park anniversary.

The biodiversity of flora of the area of Biokovo has been covered in great detail, and confirmed in many works written by numerous experts on the topic. The works published so far reveal that the area of Biokovo (the mountain massif in a wider sense of the word) has over 1,400 autochthonous taxa of vascular plants (Šilić & Šolić, 2002). This number is not definite, however, since research is ongoing continuously.

Major diversity of the flora and a high number of endemic plants on Biokovo are results of the fact that many plants of extraordinarily diverse origin and age grow together in one space. A species of broom locally called Burina žukica; Astragalus angustifolius Lam. ssp. biokovensis Kušan; various taxa of Biokovo knapweed; Dianthus integer Vis.; Onosma biokovoense Domac; Cerinthe tristis Teyb.; Biokovo bellflower; a unique taxon of rocky bells; Hieracium waldsteinii ssp. biokovoense... these are only some of the endemic species with Biokovo as their locus classicus – a locality from which they were first described.

It is well known that plants are a foundation of biodiversity. They serve as habitat for animals and a source of food not only for animals, but also for people, which means that there is no survival without plants. Therefore, it is extremely important that we treat this natural wealth with respect, and that we evaluate it properly and protect it adequately, in order for it to remain conserved for future generations.

Presentation of the Geological Guidebook Through Biokovo Nature Park

Presentation of the Geological Guidebook Through Biokovo Nature Park, together with a presentation of the process of its preparation, will be held in the conference hall of Aparthotel Miramare, Šetalište Svetog Petra 1 in Makarska, on Thursday, 8 December 2016 beginning at 18:00.

In addition to the book authors, speakers will also include prof. dr. sc. Ivan Dragičević from the Faculty of Mining, Geology and Petroleum Engineering, and prof. dr. sc. Nenad Buzjak from the Department of Geography of the Faculty of Science in Zagreb.

In preparing and drafting the Guidebook, the authors have analyzed topographic and geological maps of the wider area of Biokovo, and they have also hiked along most of the marked hiking trails, but also some unmarked ones, geologically analyzing them in the process. Having determined the situation in the field, the authors then selected 15 geologically most interesting hiking trails, safe, marked and accessible to visitors, which they analyzed in great geological detail and described in the Geological Guidebook. In addition to descriptions of each trail, a geological map on a scale of 1:25000 is also included in the Guidebook, which will enable the readers to determine their exact geological position at each point in time.

The geology of Biokovo cannot be tackled only at the level of Nature Park boundaries; instead, it must be analyzed comprehensively in its entire complexity.

Towards the end of the Cretaceous period, approximately 65 million years ago, the African plate and the Eurasian plate began colliding. The narrowing of the ocean space resulted in strong tectonic disorder, with horizontal layers wrinkling, breaking and rising above the sea surface, creating the mountain chains of the Alps and the Dinarides, with Biokovo as constituent part of the latter.

As of 2002 – the year that was proclaimed the International Year of Mountains, reminding of the importance of natural resource conservation in mountain areas – the world has been traditionally marking the International Mountain Day each year on 11 December, aiming to emphasize the enormous importance of the mountains and the need for sustainable mountain development, which results in better quality of livelihoods in local communities.

European honey buzzard released back to nature

On Thursday, 29 September 2016 in the morning hours, after slightly over one month of recovery in the Falconry Center in Šibenik, European honey buzzard (Pernis apivorus) found in Tučepi near the hotel Jadran was released back to nature from the viewpoint of Ravna Vlaška in the Biokovo Nature Park.

Chief ranger Stipe Srzić and Ivana Gabrić, biologist and ecologist, took over the bird from Emilio Menđušić early in the morning just prior to release, and brought it from Šibenik where it had went through recovery and where it was ringed. The release of the bird back to nature was also used by the Public Institution to organize education for approximately 30 children from the third grade of the Tučepi Elementary School, accompanied by teacher Marlena Bogdanović. Preschool children from the DV Zvončica kindergarten from Makarska, accompanied by their teacher Zorica Mihaljević, also joined the event. The education for children was managed by Ivan Budinski from the BIOM Association – the organization involved in bird research and monitoring in the Park in cooperation with the Public Institution. Other trainers included the educator Slavo Jakša, geologist Hrvoje Škrabić, trainee geologist Teo Jašaragić-Rako, and biologist and ecologist Ivana Gabrić from the expert service of the Public Institution. The children thus got acquainted with the importance of birds of prey and the need to protect them, learning about biology and ecology of the European honey buzzard species, key characteristics of the Biokovo Nature Park and its geology, and about the entire story of how the bird was found and saved.

The bird was released to nature in the presence of Andrea Šošić, who originally informed the Institution of the finding of the bird. Unfortunately, the children and staff members of the Institution did not have the opportunity to meet Antonio Bušelić from Tučepi, who had played a key role in the bird's rescue, since he was unable to join the event due to other commitments. Mr. Bušelić was the person who had originally found and photographed the bird, and then forwarded the news and the photograph to Branko Filipeti, who then informed Andrea. We would therefore like to take the opportunity and thank everyone involved for their assistance and proper reaction in alerting the Institution of the injured bird. On the basis of the initial photographs, the bird was recognized as European honey buzzard, and Ante Šarić and Ivana Gabrić from the Public Institution then successfully found and captured the bird on the basis of description of the locality. Thomas Mravičić, owner of the agency Tip-exteme, assisted the organization of education for children by providing free-of-charge transfer for children from Makarska and Tučepi to the viewpoint of Ravna Vlaška – the Park wishes to thank Mr. Mravičić for this donation. The children wished farewell to the bird in its departure to warmer lands, joined by their teachers and the Institution staff, representatives of the BIOM Association and the media. They were also joined by Filip Vilim Šabić and several curious visitors. The departure of the bird – a spectacular sight due to its size, beauty and speed of flight – completely thrilled the visitors, in particular children who will continue to learn about birds of prey in their school and kindergarten, thus helping to spread information about how to act when coming across injured strictly protected birds of prey in nature, which will also help wildlife rescue and conservation efforts in general. All those present wished our European honey buzzard a pleasant trip and plenty of strength for the flight all the way to Africa, in the hope that the rescued bird will return to our lands many more times!

In the Footsteps of Tradition and Vernacular Architecture – Veliki Godinj 2016

The event In the Footsteps of Tradition and Vernacular Architecture was held in the hamlet of Rašćane called Veliki Godinj on Saturday, 27 August 2016, for the eighth consecutive year. The event was organized by the Biokovo Nature Park Public Institution, Vrgorac Tourist Board and the regional cultural association Veliki Godinj.

Visitors who came to Veliki Godinj had the chance to enjoy traditional workshops aimed at reviving ancient traditions – such as traditional stone carving techniques, or preparation of the delicacy kumpet (also known as čupter or mantala) that represents part of Croatia's protected intangible heritage, with the kumpet workshop led by Park staff member Vedrana Vela Puharić. The program also included an exhibition of carvings by Mate Bebek, stories from the wheat threshing floor, and a competition in traditional stone throwing similar to shot put. Mr. Vice Bušelić prepared the Biokovo bronzin by using an ancient recipe handed over to him by his grandmother. Members of the cultural club KUD Dusina from the settlement of Dusina added to the cultural entertainment program, together with the harmony-singing group Goromita from Vrgorac, their songs and dances taking visitors on a time voyage to an old, long forgotten era when this area of the Biokovo hinterland teemed with life.

The event also included the marking of the 20th anniversary of the International Bat Night, and visitors had the opportunity to enjoy a 30-minute popular science documentary Of Bats and Darkness by the Czech director Jan Hošek.

Veliki Godinj is a hamlet of the village of Rašćane, and a true pearl of vernacular architecture and traditional way of life. Veliki Godinj was first mentioned in 1412. Due to its unique character and high degree of conservation, it has the status of protected cultural heritage.

On the occasion of the jubilee 20th International Bat Night

International Bat Night is being marked for the 20th year in a row, in the final weekend of August (27-28 August). The event is held under the auspices of the Agreement on the Conservation of Populations of European Bats (EUROBATS; more info available at http://www.eurobats.org/).

The Republic of Croatia is party to the Agreement on the Conservation of Populations of European Bats since 2000, when the Act on the Confirmation of the Agreement on the Conservation of Populations of European Bats (EUROBATS) was reached. On the occasion of the International Bat Night, Biokovo Nature Park Public Institution will organize a screening of the 30-minute popular science film "Of Bats and Darkness" by director Jan Hošek. The screening will take place as part of the event "In the Footsteps of Tradition and Vernacular Architecture" held in Veliki Godinj – Rašćane, on 27 August 2016.

Various activities are being undertaken with the aim of raising awareness on the importance of bats in nature, the threats that they face, and the need to protect and conserve them. There are over 1100 bat species recorded in the world, and many of the 45 European bat species are endangered today, some even facing extinction. With 35 bat species recorded in the country, Croatia is one of the richest countries in Europe when it comes to bat diversity, and Biokovo is home to 13 bat species recorded so far. All bat species in Croatia are strictly protected. The main causes behind the threats that they face are loss of habitats due to excessive forest clearing, and use of pesticides and chemicals in agricultural production. It is prohibited to capture, disturb or kill bats. Bats are particularly sensitive to any disturbance during their hibernation and reproduction, when stress can result in major agitation and even death.

These sole flying mammals of the world use echolocation – a capacity similar to sonar technology – to find their way in space and to find food. They fly at dusk and during the night in search for food, and they spend their days in tree hollows or cracks, in caves, basements and attics, as well as in cracks and openings in buildings. They live in groups ranging from ten to several thousand bats, called colonies. In summer colonies, bats raise their young, hibernating in colonies during winter. This is the time of year when their metabolism slows down, with their heartbeat slowing from 400 to between 10 and 5 beats per minute, and their body temperature also decreasing. In deep hibernation, bats can even stop breathing, sometimes for more than an hour. With the arrival of spring, they wake from their winter sleep, and focus on feeding and nursing their young, with females usually having one offspring at a time. Bats can live longer than 20 years, sometimes even up to 30 years. All European bat species feed on insects, but there are also bat species in the world that feed on fruit, nectar and pollen. Only three rare species in South and Central America eat animal blood. In order to survive, bats must eat one third of their body weight in insects per day, which makes them very important in biological insect control.

Unfortunately, there are still many prejudices concerning bats. For example, bats are not blind – they have eyes and they can see, but they predominantly use sound and echolocation to orient themselves in space. Using their mouth and nose, they emit sounds (at the frequency that only they can hear), capturing echoes around them with their large ears. In such a manner, they are capable of excellent perception of space around them, so there is really no reason to fear that they will end up entangled in your hair.

Holy Mass in the Church of St. Elijah at Staza

Holy Mass was held on the occasion of the feast day of St. Elijah in the small church of St. Elijah at Staza in the Biokovo Nature Park, on Wednesday, 20 July 2016. The Holy Mass for approximately 20 people of faith present on the occasion was led by Fr. Mile Čalo, the parish priest of Podgora, in the company of Tomislav Mrsić, the bell-ringer.

The Church of St. Elijah is located on the mountain pass Staza (897 m.a.s.l.), right next to the road that once connected Makarska and Vrgorac, passing across Saranač (the so-called Rodić Road). The church was built on an Illyrian hill fort (there are several hill forts in the area of Staza and Podglogovik), and it is dedicated to St. Elijah – a very popular saint among the ancient Croatian population, believed to protect the folk against thunder. The feast day of St. Elijah is 20 July. The single-nave church of St. Elijah is characterized by a rectangular layout, walls made of dressed stone from the area, and by its stone vault (čemer). It was built after the Treaty of Karlowitz (1699), when the coastal area of Makarska and the region of Zagora finally became liberated from the Ottoman danger, and when it became possible to build churches without the threat of demolition. The folk poet Mate Urlić from Drašnice mentioned this church in one of his poems, written in decasyllabic lines right after the tragic battle between the rebellious inhabitants of the littoral area of Primorje (from Podgora, Drašnice, Igrane, Živogošće) and the French (on 17 June 1807).

On the occasion of the Earth Day, Biokovo Nature Park Public Institution is inviting you to a lecture "Pits of the Sv. Ilija Tunnel – A Newly Discovered Dimension of Biokovo" by mr.sc. Roman Ozimec.

Three deep pits, discovered in the process of construction of the Sv. Ilija Tunnel passing through the mountain of Biokovo, are being explored since 2012. According to the results, these pits have major hydrological potential, and it is likely that new underground spaces, underground watercourses and cave fauna will be discovered in further research of the area in the future.

It is important that the community living around Biokovo perceives mountain caves and pits with their unique cave fauna as a symbol of uniqueness, high value and beauty of the subterranean karst world, protected by law against negative human impact.

The lecture will be held in the premises of the Music School in Makarska, beginning on Earth Day, 22 April 2016, at 18.

In addition, Biokovo Nature Park Public Institution will join the global Green Cleanup campaign. The campaign will be held on Saturday, 23 April 2016, in cooperation with the mountaineering society HPD Biokovo and the speleological club SAK Ekstrem from Makarska, together with the mountaineering society HPD Sv. Jure Zagvozd from Zagvozd. It will cover the area of the Park entrance, a wider area around the Vošac mountain lodge, the peak of Vošac, and the area around the peak of Sv. Jure.

PLANT 1000 ABOVE 1000 campaign held

On Tuesday and Wednesday, 29 and 30 March 2016, Biokovo Nature Park Public Institution provided 3000 kilograms of seed potato to owners of arable land in Biokovo karst valleys above the 1000 m.a.s.l. threshold, aiming to promote traditional agriculture among the local population.

The farmers received seed potato of the Red Lady variety, which has proven to provide abundant, high-quality yields in mountain areas. The campaign included approximately 100 interested owners of arable land in karst valleys of Biokovo located on the southern and northern side of the mountain, who received seed potato in 25-kilogram bags.

World Water Day – Water and Jobs

For twenty three years, World Water Day has been marked on 22 March with the aim of raising awareness among the general public on the importance and value of water, promoting and drawing the attention to sustainable use of existing water resources at the global level. Each year, World Water Day events emphasize a specific aspect of water, and this year's World Water Day is dedicated to marking the theme of Water and Jobs through a range of activities taking place throughout the world.

Today, almost half of the world's workers work in water related sectors, and yet these millions of workers are often not recognized or protected by basic labor rights. This year's theme is therefore focusing on how sufficient quantity and quality of water can change workers' livelihoods – and even transform economies and societies.

The first important recommendations on water related issues and water resources were formulated at the United Nations Water Conference held in Mer del Plata in Argentina in 1977. Following the recommendation of the UN Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, the UN General Assembly adopted the resolution designating 22 March 1993 as the first official World Water Day.

Public Institution in charge of Biokovo Nature Park is marking this year's World Water Day by organizing an educational workshop for the preschool age group, with a special emphasis on water circulation in nature and on water and jobs. Activities will be organized in the kindergarten Biokovsko zvonce – Ciciban, in cooperation with the utility company Makarski komunalac. Education for the group of 20 children is scheduled for Tuesday, 22 March 2016, and it will be provided by expert service staff of the Public Institution and staff of the company Makarski komunalac, together with teachers of the kindergarten group.

In addition, the marking of this year's World Water Day as an important date in nature protection also includes a traditional activity organized together with the association Mucića ledenice, and scheduled for Wednesday, 23 March 2016 – the cleaning of ponds in the northern area of the Park, in the territory of the municipality of Zagvozd.

Marking of the International Mountain Day

Public Institution in charge of the Biokovo Nature Park has marked this year's International Mountain Day by promoting the Park calendar for 2016 and by organizing the preparation of a traditional dish of Biokovo called sočivica s kaštradinom, made from lentil and cured sheep or goat meat.

The celebration of the International Mountain Day was held at the square of Kačićev trg in Makarska on Friday, 11 December 2015. Taking into account the motto of this year's International Mountain Day – Promoting mountain products for better livelihoods – Biokovo Nature Park cooperated with the Maredin association from Makarska in preparing the traditional Biokovo dish sočivica s kaštradinom for all visitors, based on the traditional recipe used by shepherds during their stay on the mountain of Biokovo in the grazing season in the past.
Aiming to preserve memory of the culinary tradition that once characterized the area of Biokovo, the Nature Park also promoted the Park calendar for 2016 at the event marking this year's International Mountain Day. The calendar contains recipes for traditional dishes of the Biokovo region.

International Mountain Race Makarska – Vošac

On the occasion of the International Day for Biological Diversity and Nature Protection Day in the Republic of Croatia, the Biokovo Nature Park and Sveti Marko Athletic Club are organizing the International Mountain Race Makarska – Vošac.

The mountain race starts at the Makarska waterfront, and ends on the peak of Vošac (at 1422 m.a.s.l.) in the Biokovo Nature Park. The trail is 8.6 kilometers long, narrow and hard to access, with the climb of 1421 meters, making it one of the most difficult routes of its kind in Europe.

The International Mountain Race Makarska – Vošac was held for the first time in 2007, based on the initiative of the Sveti Marko Athletic Club from Makarska. Back then, it brought together approximately 70 sportspersons and recreational hikers from around 20 Croatian athletic clubs. In the period from 2009 until 2011, the competition gradually developed into an event based on the system recommended by the World Mountain Running Association (WMRA), taking into account the length of the route, elevation and gradient. These parameters on the Biokovo route are suitable for all categories. Makarska – Vošac Mountain Race has turned into a traditional mountain race in Croatia, and it is one of the most difficult mountain races in the country. The characteristics of the route fulfill the requirements for European and world mountain running championships.
