Attractions

Lighthouse Struga

Struga lighthouse is located in Skrivena luka. It is 7 kilometers away from the settlement of Lastovo, and 17 kilometers away from the ferry port in Ubli. The lighthouse was built in 1839 on a cape of the same name, and it is the second-oldest lighthouse in the Adriatic. It has a 20-meter high cylindrical tower located at 104 meters above sea level. With its 222 square meters, the lighthouse building includes four suites (two one-bedroom suites and two single-room suites), each with a large kitchen, dining area and bathroom. The lighthouse is equipped with heating, and visits are possible outside of the peak season as well.

Due to its distance from the coast, the lighthouse is a lone presence, as if immersed in blue sky and open sea. Located at the very edge of a steep cliff, it offers amazing view of the open sea. Light from the Struga lighthouse can be seen from the distance of 20 nautical miles, warning vessels that they are approaching Lastovo. The impressive cliff is home to gorgonian coral colonies in its depths. Incredible vistas and simple access to the sea through pine forest to the north of the lighthouse make this site an attractive tourist destination.

Lighthouse Glavat

Glavat lighthouse is located on the easternmost island of the Lastovo archipelago. Its distance from Lastovo is 9 nautical miles to the east, and its distance from Korčula 12 nautical miles to the south. The Glavat lighthouse began operating in 1884. The building of the lighthouse represents one of the larger lighthouse facilities on the Croatian side of the Adriatic. Its surface is 220 square meters, with 60 square meters of usable attic space.
The lighthouse has a water cistern, and the lighthouse signaling system receives electricity from batteries charged by solar panels and converters. The light chamber is located at 45 meters above sea level, dominating the archipelago at night. With its many caves and stone blocks, the undersea environment around the lighthouse is very attractive for divers.

Early Christian basilica in Ubli (archaeological excavation

The basilica is 17 meters long and 6.75 meters wide, oriented in east-west direction. Built of rough stone and plastered, it had a semicircular apse externally reinforced with counterforts. A painted stone bench decorated the interior along the wall. The sacred site was enclosed by thin marble slabs that were kept in place by thin stone pillars, with only the fragments of these pillars remaining. A shallow relief with a triangular ending was found among stone remains of the entry door, and it is currently kept in the Archaeological Museum in the city of Zadar.

Remains of a chequered marble window grille have been found as well, and the construction style points to the conclusion that the basilica was built in the 6th century. What is interesting about this site is that the entrance to the basilica was placed laterally, and it was accessed from the narthex – a vestibule with a porch on six columns. A built tomb was found in its western corner. On the southern side, the basilica had four rooms. The central rooms were used for religious rites, and the lateral rooms contained sarcophagi and graves cut into the rock, found during the exploration. The remains of the basilica were conserved in the period from 1978 until 1981.

Klačine or limekilns can be found on several localities on the island of Lastovo. The two most intriguing such sites are located along an old forest path leading to the settlement of Zaklopatica. Ancient inhabitants of Lastovo built these facilities to produce lime.

Limekilns were built near the settlement or construction site that they were serving. A limekiln was covered in stone both externally and internally, one half of it below ground, and the other half above ground, in the form of a dome. Door placed on the front was used to keep up the fire.

In high temperature, the stone of the dome would melt, and the dome would collapse. Mixing the resulting substance with water resulted in slaked lime, which was used in the construction of houses and walls, and in other construction works. Stone, sand and lime were the only available construction materials in the past.

Lučica is an important cultural and historical monument from the medieval times. It can be reached by an easy 10-minute walk from the settlement of Lastovo, passing through a rare habitat of coniferous forest and holm oak thicket with myrtle.

Lučica is the last preserved example of a Baroque fishing settlement in this part of Dalmatia. Fishing has always represented an important source of food and revenue for the local population. The inhabitants of Lastovo started building stone fishing houses in this narrow cove in the 17th century. These houses served them as shelter during storms and as storage for fishing tools, and they also cured fish there and repaired the boats.

Lighthouse Sušac

Sušac lighthouse is located on the island of the same name – the westernmost island of the Lastovo Archipelago located 13 nautical miles away from the island of Lastovo. The lighthouse was built in 1878 on the highest peak of the southern side of the island. That side of the island is extraordinarily steep, with the cliffs diving into the deep and clear sea transparent up to the depth of thirty meters, following the northerly bora wind. The southeastern side of the island is mildly sloping towards the sea, and it abounds in beautiful coves and walking paths. The building of the lighthouse is a two-storey stone facility with a tower rising above the central part of the building, located at 80 meters above sea level. The living quarters of the lighthouse keeper are located on the ground level, with two fully equipped four-bed suites with an amazing view located upstairs. The lighthouse has its own water cistern, and photovoltaic panels and batteries are used for electricity supply.

There are two churches on the island of Sušac, both of them ruins. The church of St. Nicholas above the cove of Portić was built in the 12th century, and the church of St. Mary was built in the 15th century. In the northern part of the island, one can see the remains of small houses, neglected karst valleys, olive groves and several small fields. The only inhabitants of the island are the lighthouse keepers. A shepherd tending to sheep occasionally lives on the opposite side of the island.

Sušac is unique in many ways, including a phenomenon that can be seen at the cliffs of its northern shore. That is where nature has formed two small sea lakes. One of these lakes can be reached from the sea, by diving through an underwater cave at the depth of approximately fifteen meters.
