Winter bird census

Continuing the tradition of bird counting campaigns held each year in the course of January, the staff of Lonjsko Polje Nature Park Public Institution and members of the Croatian Society for Bird and Nature Protection engaged in winter wetland bird census in the area.

Each year in the course of January, various associations, scientific organizations for bird and nature protection, as well as numerous volunteers from throughout Europe, engage in winter wetland bird census at hundreds of locations, assessing the size of wetland bird populations.

January is a favorable month for the counting of wetland birds since it is the coldest month of the year – it is assumed that all wetland birds are present in their wintering areas at this time, and that their concentration in such localities is at its highest this time of year. In addition, it is also assumed that no spring migrations are in progress, which minimizes the risk of double counting.

In the wider area of Lonjsko Polje Nature Park, birds were counted at 36 locations, including the Sava River and the fish ponds of Lipovljani. Relatively harsh winter had a clear impact on the numbers of wintering birds, since the birds predominantly stayed in unfrozen areas – i.e. the Sava River – which resulted in a significantly lower recorded number of birds compared to previous years.

Census data is being processed, and the data will become part of the global wetland bird database. It is worth pointing out that the Decision of the Ministry of Culture of 2005 prohibited game bird hunting in the area of Lonjsko Polje Nature Park, which significantly contributed to the protection of endangered bird species. However, given the fact that the Sava River in the eastern part of the Nature Park also represents the state border with Bosnia and Herzegovina, where bird hunting remains allowed, significant disturbance of birds remains an issue.

Prohibition of bird hunting represents an important step in overall nature protection in Croatia and in the implementation of the Ramsar Convention and the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals, signed by the Republic of Croatia. By accepting the obligations stemming from these Conventions, Croatia also undertook the obligation to periodically report on the status of wetland areas and wetland birds every six years, which means that the institutions in charge of managing protected areas must regularly monitor the state of affairs and process the relevant data in order to assess the situation based on the Ramsar Convention criteria.

EuroBirdwatch

This year, European birdwatching days (EuroBirdwatch) were attended by 24,115 people, making it the biggest European birdwatching campaign, organized by 40 national partner organizations of BirdLife International in Europe and Central Asia. In more than 1,000 different events, the participants spent the weekend observing a stunning autumn migration of birds making their way southwards to their wintering areas.

This year, 40 countries in Europe and Central Asia participated in EuroBirdwatch, with 1,070 organized events that enabled the participants to observe 5.8 million migratory birds. In addition to observing, identifying and counting the passing birds, many BirdLife partner organizations offered various activities, ranging from photo exhibitions to ornithological excursions and public bird ringings. Special events have also been organized for children.

As millions of birds are traveling to their wintering areas in the Mediterranean and in Africa, EuroBirdwatch encourages people of all ages to observe, enjoy and learn about migratory birds and their amazing abilities, as well as the dangers that they face on their long journeys. The data collected by all national BirdLife partner organizations were evaluated and published by the European Center – a task taken on by a different BirdLife partner organization each year. This year, BirdLife Switzerland – the Swiss national partner organization – had the honor of processing the data (accessible online at: www.eurobirdwatch.eu). The collected data available on the website represents only a brief summary of a multitude of important observations performed during the EuroBirdwatch 2016 campaign.

Ornithological highlights:

  • Huge swarms of chaffinches and starlings were observed in many countries, making them two of the most widely observed species during this year’s EuroBirdwatch.
  • Slovakia registered the Radde’s warbler for the first time during the EuroBirdwatch.

Other highlights:

  • In Gibraltar, the Minister of environment & climate change was amongst the visitors of EuroBirdwatch events.
  • LIPU – the Italian BirdLife partner – organized a competition amongst the public called the "Big Day", where participants could compete in observing the highest number of species in a day.
  • In Montenegro, pupils from local schools in Podgorica painted nesting houses for peregrine falcons, which will be distributed throughout the country.
  • In Poland, a great number of schools and kindergartens participated in the EuroBirdwatch.
  • In Luxembourg, Minister of State Camille Gira visited the EuroBirdwatch.
  • In Macedonia, representatives from the Polish, Dutch and German embassies took part.
  • In Switzerland, the event was announced in the weather forecast on Swiss national TV.

Croatia has been a regular participant in this campaign since 1996. This year, birds were counted at 40 sites – in cities, villages, national and nature parks, and at reservoirs... In total, over 30,000 birds belonging to 126 species were counted, which is the largest number since the country joined the campaign. The most widely observed species in Croatia were the Eurasian coot, common starling and graylag goose. Some globally threatened species have been sighted too, such as pygmy cormorant, ferruginous duck and white-tailed eagle. Other highlights include the last remaining examples of our nesting bird species, such as the Eurasian spoonbill; the first winter guests, such as e.g. great grey shrike; fish eagle as a rare species in Croatia; and the exotic species Egyptian goose.

European birdwatching days - EuroBirdwatch 2016

This time of year, millions of migratory birds leave Europe and fly towards their wintering areas in Africa. BirdLife International invites the people of Europe and Central Asia to discover the amazing world of bird migrations on the weekend of 1 and 2 October 2016.

This year, 36 national partner organizations of BirdLife International in Europe and Central Asia invite citizens to observe migratory birds and to learn interesting facts about bird migrations and about the threats that birds face along the route. Several hundred events are planned throughout Europe on the occasion.

The research conducted and published by BirdLife International in 2015 has shown that approximately 25 million(!) migratory birds end up killed throughout the Mediterranean each year. After overcoming this section of their voyage, most migratory birds have yet to cross the inhospitable Sahara desert, and survive many other dangers along the route – and they have to do it two times per year! Partner organizations of BirdLife International in involved countries consider the fight against this senseless killing ongoing without any justification to be their top priority.

Nesting areas in the north, together with resting places and safe routes, are essential for the survival of migratory birds, just like suitable habitats in migratory birds' wintering areas. The aim of EuroBirdwatch 2016 is to raise awareness about the miracle of bird migration, and to understand the needs of birds during their nesting, migrations and wintering in the Mediterranean and in Africa.

EuroBirdwatch is an annual campaign that includes hundreds of activities organized throughout our continent. Participants and sighted birds are recorded in birdwatching areas, and national coordinators then report on the results to the European headquarters. Last year, there were 1,093 events organized in 41 countries in Europe and Central Asia, and these events brought together over 32,000 participants who observed over 5 million birds!

In 2016, the campaign is coordinated by BirdLife Switzerland, which also serves as the European center that will process the data received from participating countries. In Croatia, the campaign is jointly implemented by the BIOM Association (BirdLife partner organization in Croatia) and the Croatian Society for Bird and Nature Protection.

The departure spot for transfer of visitors eager to engage in birdwatching in the Lonjsko Polje Nature Park will be announced shortly.

Following the storks Leto and Tesla on their migratory flight

Let us present two storks whose flight to the south we will be carefully monitoring in the following months. These two storks are part of a genuine scientific research that will contribute to a better understanding of the threats that storks face along their seasonal migration routes.

The marking and monitoring of storks in Lonjsko Polje Nature Park are aimed at determining the character of the eastern migration route used by storks that depart from our areas southwards. These activities are part of the SOS Stork – Croatia project, which includes the participation of Storch Schweiz Association, City of Zagreb Zoo and Lonjsko Polje Nature Park. Some of the questions we want to answer are whether there are any localities along the route where storks rest more frequently or for a longer time; are these resting sites urban in character, or predominantly meadows or wetlands; finally, how far south our storks fly once in Africa. In addition, the idea is to determine the key dangers that storks face along the route, such as long-distance power lines or open water towers. Monitoring is performed by attaching small transmitters to storks, which then send data on the current location in 20-minute intervals. Mobile technology networks are used to transmit data to the center where computer data analysis is performed.

In June 2016, we have thus marked two adult storks in the European Stork Village of Čigoč, located in the Nature Park. The monitoring of storks in their migration to faraway lands, which is conducted within the project, has been made possible thanks to the funding support from the EuroNatur Foundation. The marking of storks was performed by the staff of the City of Zagreb Zoo, the Nature Park and the associations BIOM and Storch Schweiz. The storks were captured using nets at the feeding site, tagged with GPS locators, and then released back to nature.

Thanks to dedicated followers of Facebook pages of the Zagreb Zoo and the Nature Park, our storks now also have their names. The female stork has been named after the goddess Leto, protector of ploughmen and cattle farmers, while the male stork has been named Tesla. Their voyage to Africa will be monitored in real time, with their current positions available in the "stork diary" of Leto and Tesla.

If you are interested in finding out where Leto and Tesla are at the moment, or where they have been, please visit:

http://storch-schweiz.danielbischof.de/map/1195522;

http://storch-schweiz.danielbischof.de/map/1195521.

If you are interested in keeping up to date with their movements, you can also download a free smartphone app by clicking on the following link.

We wish all the best to Leto and Tesla on their voyage, and can't wait to explore their route to warmer lands.

Repušnica Visitor Center – the Moslavina door to the Nature Park

The final conference of the EU project dedicated to the opening of an official entrance to the Lonjsko Polje Nature Park and the Repušnica Visitor Center was held on December 11, 2015.

The visitor center in Repušnica is not merely a new "door" to Lonjsko polje from the Moslavina side – it also represents a new perspective for the development of tourism in the region of Moslavina and the city of Kutina, providing tourism opportunities to the local population, various associations and entrepreneurs. The City of Kutina was the main partner in the project, together with the Tourist Board of the City of Kutina and Local Action Group Moslavina as partners, and Lonjsko Polje Nature Park, City of Popovača and Municipality of Velika Ludina as collaborators.

Two wooden facilities built in traditional architectural style were presented at the event, together with newly prepared hiking and cycling trails, horseback riding trails and routes for boat tours in this part of the Park. In addition, the first smartphone application with cycling routes of Lonjsko polje was presented to visitors as well. One other presentation held on the day of the conference focused on souvenirs made by the local population and chosen at the competition for the best souvenirs of the region of Moslavina. Approximately ten agreements have been signed, including agreements on the continuation of cooperation with associations from Repušnica, cities of Popovača and Kutina and the Municipality of Velika Ludina, and with entrepreneurs and the Public Institution in charge of Lonjsko Polje Nature Park.

Events on the occasion of World Wetlands Day

Traditional marking of the World Wetlands Day in the Park is organized by the Kutina branch of the national cultural organization Matica Hrvatska and Lonjsko Polje Nature Park. The event organized on the occasion – meeting entitled Future at the Edge of Wetlands – took place on Saturday, January 30, 2016. The village of Potok was the venue of the event, with guests including the representatives of the competent ministry and representatives of the local county, cities and municipalities. In the morning, they visited the facilities of the new Visitor Center in Repušnica, discussing the implementation of a similar visitor center project in Osekovo.

The program for the wider public in Potok began in the street Ulica seljačke bune, dedicated to the large peasant revolt of the area of Moslavina that took place exactly two centuries ago, on 2 and 3 February 1816, with 17 peasants killed in the revolt.

In accordance with the tradition, one part of the program took place in the local school. The program also included an art exhibition of the works of Ludmila Biželj and photographs of the area of Moslavina by Alfred Matijašević from the nearby settlement of Stružec. An exhibition dedicated to beekeeping also represented an important part of the celebration, pointing out the importance of honey plants and bees of Lonjsko polje in sustainable development.

Current projects of the Nature Park were presented as well, together with a brief historical overview of the peasant revolt from two centuries ago, and a proposal on how to mark this historical event in the future. In addition to the local culture and art association KUD Potočanka that performed at the event, the program also included the performance of the association KUD Repušnica, which will host the annual event in 2017. In a new development, the program was finalized with folk songs and dance performed by members of the association Kraplani from the settlement of Krapje – the center of the Lonjsko Polje Nature Park.
